As technology and communications make the country and the world more and more accessible to businesses of every description, lawyers representing those businesses are tethered to their state of admission to the bar and venture outside of that state at their peril. The subject of Multijurisdictional Practice is receiving a great deal of attention from the courts, bar associations and practitioners. In-house counsels and large firm lawyers want the license to practice law to be as portable as a driver's license. Many state supreme courts are reluctant to give up the controls over practice in the state that assure quality representation for the public. The rules and solutions coming out of the state supreme courts are contradictory, leading to a fear of paralysis among multijurisdictional practitioners.

This program will provide an up-to-the-minute account of what the courts are saying about this subject in cases seeking fees, disqualification of adversary counsel and sanctions. It will also give you a sense of what the ABA and state task forces are considering. Presenters will include lawyers from different types of practices, Counsel to the US Attorney, the Reporter for the ABA Ethics 2000 Commission and the Massachusetts Bar Counsel as well as a representative from the Rhode Island Board of Bar Overseers and the Rhode Island Committee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law.
