ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

With the approval of a solid majority of voters in the 2012 election, medical marijuana is now legal in Massachusetts. This dramatic change in state law arrives amidst uncertainty and flux in national marijuana law and policy, driven by the ongoing march of states where medical marijuana is legal. Contributing to the legal ambiguities regarding enforcing marijuana’s criminal prohibition is the recent legalization in Colorado and Washington, notwithstanding federal law. The recent legalization of non-medical marijuana in Colorado and Washington further complicates prohibition enforcement.

As Massachusetts becomes the 18th medical marijuana state, important questions demand serious examination. How will dispensaries work? What is the likely legal framework? What can Massachusetts citizens, patients, doctors, lawyers, and public officials expect? What are the potential risks and benefits?

This program provides a guide to how the new law will function in Massachusetts within the broader context of regional and national developments. You will hear from a variety of medical and legal experts to gain a full understanding of the issues from the perspectives of different stakeholders. Unlike programs focused solely on lawyer education, this presentation addresses the interests of doctors, law enforcement officials, municipal administrators and legislators.
