CLINICAL PROGRAMS : INDIAN LAW AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLES CLINIC
ILIP is a one semester, four-credit course and students will receive a letter grade. This is a new clinic being launched in January, 2012 and will serve the legal needs of tribal courts and governments located in New England, as well as tribal individuals living in the region. There are nine federally recognized Indian tribes within the New England area, a handful of which have tribal courts, and several more state recognized tribes. The types of projects and cases on which students may work will be driven in large part by the legal needs of these tribes. However, students can expect to work on projects as diverse as drafting court rules and tribal codes, developing materials to assist pro se claimants in tribal court, engaging in Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) representation and participating in advocacy efforts before international and regional human rights bodies. In addition to working on these types of projects, students will explore the unique aspects of lawyering in Indian country and working for tribal governments, build upon their substantive knowledge of federal Indian law and international human rights as it applies to indigenous peoples, and develop their research, writing and analytical skills. Students will also work on building the clinic through client outreach and community education endeavors. Starting in the fall 2012 ILIP will become a full-year, 8-credit clinic. Students who have completed or are currently enrolled in Indigenous Peoples Rights and U.S. Law will be given preference. Questions: Contact nfriederichs@suffolk.edu, Practitioner in Residence |
