COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


Evidence and Trial Advocacy
Hon. Linda Giles, Hon. Angel Kelley Brown, Prof. Michael Avery, Ms. Page Kelley
4 credits day; 4 credits evening.

These two courses are linked and must be taken at the same time. The focus will be on the Federal Rules of Evidence, applied to issues of: relevance; character evidence; hearsay and hearsay exceptions; examination and cross-examination of witnesses; credibility and impeachment; introduction of exhibits; demonstrative aides and technology in the courtroom; opinion testimony; experts and scientific proof; opening and closing arguments; functions of the judge and the jury; privileges; and burdens of proof. The principles of Evidence law taught in the classroom setting will be applied in courtroom settings in coordinated classes. The goal of these courses is to merge the legal and practical aspects of presenting facts and narratives in a manner that will prepare advocates to perform most effectively in adversarial hearings.
