Problem Solving

The class is pass - fail

This course is intended to help students prepare for the practice of law by working legal problems lawyers are asked to solve. In this workshop-style course, students will have the opportunity to confront different kinds of client problems in different legal settings, and attempt to solve them the way lawyers do in practice under time constraints. Students will work in teams to identify: their client, their client’s goals, the legal problems their client faces, the critical facts needed to resolve the problem, questions that need to be answered, and options that should be considered. Students will develop a methodology to solve legal problems, by combining knowledge of the law, theory, and practical judgment, to help clients achieve their goals within the bounds of the law. Hands-on, collaborative learning will require students to actively participate and apply practice problem-solving techniques to numerous and varied assignments, utilizing legal research, writing, and oral communication skills.
