COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


Media and the Message: Documentary Films and Legal Advocacy
Ms. Abby Ginzberg
1 credits day; 1 credits evening.

The course will introduce students to the importance of media strategies in the pursuit of legal cases and causes. The class will consist of viewing clips from feature length documentaries, news programs and law-student produced short films and analyzing the role the films and social media strategies have played in raising public consciousness about the various legal issues presented in the films. Students will develop an appreciation for how a media strategy is integral to helping raise awareness about legal issues such as tort reform, alternatives to incarceration, super-max prisons and immigration reform. In addition, students will hone their own skills for developing a successful media/public relations campaign a part of their toolkit for practicing law.

Course requirement: To develop a media strategy for a hypothetical case involving one of the substantive areas covered in the course. Students will all draft a two-page press release and submit a written 2-page plan for the media strategy. Course will be graded pass/fail.
