LEGAL PRACTICE SKILLS PROGRAM ("LPS")

The Legal Practice Skills Program plays a critical role in Suffolk University Law School's continuing commitment to practice-oriented education. It prepares students to be successful attorneys by developing students professional lawyering skills. This required course teaches students the essential skills of legal writing, research, analysis, and oral advocacy, critical skills that serve as a foundation for success in law school and the legal profession. Students receive individualized attention during one-on-one conferences and small classes, in addition to receiving extensive written feedback.

The LPS course:

  • Develops critical research and writing skills by having students write both objective and persuasive memoranda.
  • Provides opportunities for students to improve their writing skills through editing exercises and rewrites of assignments.
  • Focuses on communication skills by having students draft a client letter.
  • Sharpens students' analytical skills through legal reasoning exercises.
  • Introduces the skill of oral advocacy through a moot court oral argument.
  • Ensures a comprehensive foundation in legal research by using books and computer-assisted resources.

The goals of the LPS Program are to:

  • Teach legal writing skills.
  • Develop legal research skills.
  • Apply legal reasoning skills.
  • Introduce oral argument skills.
  • Provide detailed and frequent individualized feedback.
  • Stress ethical practices in research, writing, and oral advocacy.
  • Establish confidence in lawyering skills.

Suffolk's LPS Program is a co-founder and frequent host of the New England Legal Writing Consortium.
