Barbara Anthony


 S H O R T   B I O G R A P H Y

Barbara Anthony became Massachusetts Undersecretary of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation in 2009. In addition to acting as the state’s consumer watchdog, she oversees five state agencies: Insurance, Banking, Professional Licensure, Telecommunications and Cable, and Weights and Measures. She has spent her career promoting consumer causes, and is one of the state’s most well-known consumer advocates and a highly respected public interest lawyer.

Previously, Ms. Anthony was Executive Director of Boston-based Health Law Advocates, a non-profit law firm dedicated exclusively to health care access. She also served as Regional Director of the Northeast Regional Office of the Federal Trade Commission in New York City, and earlier, as Chief of the Public Protection Bureau in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. She also served as Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for BayBanks, Inc., and began her public service career in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Ms. Anthony has taught Consumer Law and Business Regulation at Suffolk Law School since 1999 and serves on the Advisory Committee to the Dean and to the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy. She frequently appears as a commentator on media throughout the region.
