Visiting Assistant Rita Heimes taught courses in Suffolk's Global Technology LLM program, including Internet and e-commerce law, international licensing of intellectual property, and global technology transfer. Prior to joining Suffolk, Rita served as Director of the Technology Law Center and Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Maine School of Law. The Center supports Maine's investments in science and technology through educational programs and research in intellectual property law, e-commerce and technology transfer. As the Center's director, Rita was involved in developing clinical positions for students, overseeing seminars, lectures and conferences in high technology law, and administering the Maine Patent Program, a public service program providing patent and trademark advice to inventors, entrepreneurs and small businesses in Maine. She also taught courses on Internet and ecommerce law at the Maine law school.
A native Iowan, Rita received her BA in Journalism with honors and highest distinction from the University of Iowa in 1990, and a JD with honors from Drake University Law School in 1993. Following law school, she clerked with the Honorable Robert Beezer of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practiced intellectual property law with firms in Seattle, Boulder and Portland, Maine. Rita's current research interests involve the role of scientific research institutions in economic development. She regularly writes and speaks publicly on issues in law and technology
