Karl-Otto Hartmann


 S H O R T   B I O G R A P H Y

Karl Hartmann is an entrepreneur, attorney and consultant with over 30 years of experience providing advice to investment advisors, investment companies, hedge funds and hi-tech and bio-tech startups. He currently has his own law practice focused on representation of funds and their boards of directors; manages his own consultancy; and serves as an independent director/trustee for several investment companies. In addition, he is President of Money Market FX, LLC a start-up developing a patented new approach to foreign currency exchange.

Until 2006, Mr. Hartmann served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of JPMorgan Investor Services Co. The company is located in Boston and is one of the industry’s preeminent providers of custodial, financial and administrative services to investment advisers and funds. Before joining JPMorgan in 1991, he served as General Counsel for Leland O'Brien Rubinstein Associates Incorporated, where he helped develop the first exchange traded fund, the SuperTrust. Prior to that, Mr. Hartmann was Associate General Counsel of The Boston Company Advisors, Inc., where he supervised the legal affairs of the Shearson Lehman Hutton Funds as well as those of several other fund groups.

Mr. Hartmann started his legal career in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he was associated with the offices of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and Gaston & Snow. Mr. Hartmann's legal practice emphasized investment company, investment adviser, and broker-dealer matters for a broad range of financial services industry clients. He also counseled business start-ups in the hi-tech and bio-tech fields.

Mr. Hartmann is active in a variety of industry and trade associations and has made numerous presentations to such groups on legal and business developments. He has also written about key issues affecting the investment management and fund industries.

He is a member of the California and Massachusetts Bar Associations.
