Introduction

This guide introduces some important resources for Massachusetts criminal defense and information on how to find additional materials particular to the legal problem you are researching. Where appropriate this guide links to other guides prepared for the Suffolk University Law School Pro Bono Program or by the Moakley Law Library.

Finding Resources

The best search to run in the law library catalog is a keyword search.

Research Databases
The library has many databases available to current law students, faculty, and staff.

Secondary Sources of Law

Secondary sources are a good place to start when doing research on criminal defense. The following treatises and form books analyze and explain the law, give citations to statutes and leading cases, and provide sample forms. Some of the materials are general in scope, while others are specific to cases in Massachusetts or federal courts.
